I suspect the fuel pump decided to strand me in the middle of nowhere.
Between VA and WV on a great driving road...15 miles from a cell signal. Thankfully there were support vehicles for a motorcycle event with radios that called the state police (the park rangers were off due to govt shutdown.)
More to come.

I've been there!
The low pressure unit in the tank gives up so the high pressure pump has to work overtime. It overheats, creating air bubbles in the fuel. After its 30 minutes or so, it's cooked enough that you can fire it up and go for another couple of miles.
I had to replace my low pressure pump twice in two years of ownership of my E30...

Ahh, the E30 M3 in its natural habitat. Don't let it get complacent.

The other day I was stuck in an elevator with a supermodel, and can you believe this, but there was no cell service!

For the last 6 months I would occasionally hear a VERY low "whine" from the back right while in the driver's seat. I've got super sensitive hearing and no one else would admit to hearing it. I thought it might have just been the diff making a noise that only bothered me...but now I think it might have been the bearings on the old pump going under the backseat. We'll see next week.

I know it's expensive, but it might be worth it to replace both pumps and the inline fuel filter all at once. If you're mechanically capable, it's all a very easy job.
Did I mention that I also had to replace the inline pump once? 900 dollars in fuel pumps over 2 years...
I also wanted to mention that your car is in lovely condition. And I love those fenders!

Cushions for his hearing aids.

Holy shit that's a nice E30 you got there.
I'd rather have a stranded E30 M3 than the (working) car that I'm driving now lol

Makes me wonder how much this 10% (and soon 15%) ethanol gas is accelerating the rate we replace fuel delivery parts. I fill up with 100% gas as much as i can, but sometimes there just isn't a station where I go.

3 hours? Not bad.

Wow.... This guy is precariously parked across the road.. I hope it's a quiet road with clear site lines around the curve...

Seconded. I saw the posts about having an SLS and thought "this is interesting." Now I know you have a white E30 M3...
I hope the fuel pump/whatever is wrong is an easy fix.

We were parked parallel to the main road. What you see is a dead end side road. Perfectly safe.

I was there for this. It was a fun afternoon. The best part was when his ancient tow truck wouldn't start.

That looks like 311 near Paint Bank, VA. Great roads around Tech.

So, what's the verdict? How did it turn out?

Vacuum leak on the intake manifold. Think it got loosened up when they were working on the A/C up against the firewall and it took 1500 miles for it to completely come disconnected. Back on tight now, running like a champ. It's nearly always something dumb when the car goes from perfect to not starting.

Tow strap. Drag it to town because rural. Make it a Great Day.

Cheaper than a fuel pump, in any case!
